22b Addendum: Depopulation During the Great Tribulation

In modern times, a major root of the belief that the growth of world population needs to be limited and in fact significantly reduced, is found in the writings of Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834).[1]  Malthus was an English economist, cleric and scholar who was influential in the fields of political economy and demography.  Although it has been pointed out that his theory has many weaknesses, put simplistically his model can be represented by graphing an ever-increasing world population against the corresponding decline of food and natural resources due to over-consumption by such an increasing population.  Human overpopulation can ultimately lead only to misery on the part of many and a struggle to survive collectively.  The point where the lines cross on the graph below would represent an ideal maximum level of world population:

The argument of so-called Malthusian theory is simple, but deceptive and frankly evil: we must limit world population growth if we are to survive as a species, and furthermore, if we are to live a happier life with an equitable sharing of the earth’s resources without exhausting them, then in fact we need to significantly reduce world population.

Such thinking has become known as the ‘depopulation agenda,’ and it has been taken up by many globalists in recent times.  The development and wide practice of eugenics theory in Western countries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries was based in part on this kind of thinking, and it led to the sterilisation and even the extermination (under the Nazis) of ‘undesirable groups.’  More recently, leading globalist figures such as David Rockefeller and Henry Kissinger believed that population control could be fulfilled through different factors such as wars, famines and their consequent hunger and starvation, periods of significant economic turbulence, disease and pandemics, birth control, and so on.[2],[3],[4]  Such factors do indeed have a limiting effect on the growth of human population, of course, but globalist thinking moves beyond this, suggesting the proactive and deliberate use of such factors (and others) with the ultimate aim of reducing world population.

The “Club of Rome,” a globalist thinktank, has also come up with similar ideas.  It suggested that after World War 2, humankind needed to recognise a new enemy against which we need to collectively fight to ensure our own survival, and it came up with the idea that actually humanity itself is the greatest problem that we face:

‘The need for enemies seems to be a common historical factor.  Some states have striven to overcome domestic failure and internal contradictions by blaming external enemies.  The ploy of finding a scapegoat is as old as mankind itself – when things become too difficult at home, divert attention to adventure abroad.  Bring the divided nation together to face an outside enemy, either a real one, or else one invented for the purpose.  With the disappearance of the traditional enemy, the temptation is to use religious or ethnic minorities as scapegoats, especially those whose differences from the majority are disturbing…

Every state has been so used to classifying its neighbours as friend or foe, that the sudden absence of traditional adversaries has left governments and public opinion with a great void to fill.  New enemies have to be identified, new strategies imagined, and new weapons devised…

In searching for a common enemy against whom we can unite, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like, would fit the bill.  In their totality and their interactions these phenomena do constitute a common threat which must be confronted by everyone together.  But in designating these dangers as the enemy, we fall into the trap, which we have already warned readers about, namely mistaking symptoms for causes.  All these dangers are caused by human intervention in natural processes, and it is only through changed attitudes and behaviour that they can be overcome.  The real enemy then is humanity itself.’[5]

So we ourselves are the real problem, the enemy that needs to be collectively faced and overcome!  Therefore, in order to survive, we need to limit and preferably reduce our numerical growth.[6]  This kind of thinking has recently been married to climate-change ideology with its net-zero goals in order to further the globalists’ agenda.

Bill Gates is also on record as aiming for world population control and reduction, and he sees the increasingly widespread use of abortion and vaccines (some resulting in sterilisation) as also being viable methods to hinder the growth of world population.[7]  Many observers now believe that mRNA- and DNA-based injections are bioweapon tools to move this agenda forward, widely evidenced by the debilitating loss of health and significantly increased levels of excess deaths worldwide, which came about as a result of their use from 2020 onwards.  Similarly, the ever-widening practice of euthanasia in Western countries is also seen by many as a depopulation tool, and given its present trajectory it will probably eventually become a suggested if not expected lifestyle choice.

Others have taken this thinking even further, suggesting that world population needs to be reduced to a level of around one billion, or even as low as five hundred million people.  This latter figure would represent a reduction of around 94%!  They go as far as to say that this goal needs to be reached in the near future, with some suggesting a date around 2025 for this goal to be reached.  The figure of five hundred million was inscribed on the so-called Georgia Guidestones (which were recently demolished by an unknown source).[8]

Although this date of 2025 is now clearly unfeasible, yet all these different sources indicate that there is a clear globalist agenda afoot whose aim is to significantly limit and reduce world population by any means they see fit to use, and to accomplish this at some stage in the near future.  When artificial intelligence has increasingly taken over many roles in society, as is envisaged, and the need to employ humans to do many jobs is no longer necessary, thus rendering many of us both unemployed and unemployable, a whole new class of ‘useless eaters’ will emerge, as Yuval Noah Harari puts it.[9]  No doubt many will feel that they are then on the scrap-heap of life, wondering what is to become of them!  Or perhaps, as Prince Philip put it, we should all aim to be reincarnated as a virus after we die, so that we can help to solve the world’s overpopulation problem?![10]

However, I believe that this present evil Malthusian desire of globalists to cull off a major portion of humanity and to significantly reduce world population, so that the remainder can then be ruled over effectively as slaves by the rich elites who will basically own everything in their ‘brave new world order,’ will be frustrated in the purposes of God.

In the period of world history before the Great Tribulation, the maximum fractions used in the word of God relating to judgements on humanity and its consequent depopulation are the single use of ‘one quarter’ and the repeated ‘one third’ mentioned in the fourth seal and the first five trumpets respectively (cf. Rev. 6:7-8, 8:7-12, 9:15).

So personally, even if we take seriously the globalists’ agenda to significantly cull world population in the coming years by whatever means they may deem to use, yet I do not believe that God in his mercy and grace will allow their plans to be fully realised.  We do not need to live in fear of that happening.  Before the period of the Great Tribulation, I do not believe that he would allow anything above an absolute maximum reduction of one-third, if even that.[11]

Notwithstanding this, the word of God does teach that there is indeed coming a time when the world’s population will be considerably reduced.  This depopulation will happen during the Great Tribulation.  Although there is a real sense in which sinful and evil human (and therefore globalist) intentions can be subsumed under the judgements and wrath of God, yet, according to the word of God, it is not the globalist agenda which is the primary moving cause of this depopulation, it is God’s end-time judgements and the pouring out of his wrath because of human sin.

Therefore, during the Great Tribulation, the world will experience the ongoing implementation of the evil globalist agenda and its Malthusian effects leading to the depopulation of humanity, but this will be in the wider context of God’s end-time judgements on human sin.

This depopulation of the world during the Great Tribulation is clearly described by the prophets Isaiah and Zephaniah.  Neither of them minced their words when they described God’s end-time judgements on the nations of the world.  They both give us graphic and vivid descriptions of the worldwide catastrophe which will take place through these expressions of God’s wrath:

‘See, the Lord is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants – it will be the same for priest as for people, for master as for servant, for mistress as for maid, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor.  The earth will be completely laid waste and totally plundered.  The Lord has spoken this word.’ (Isa. 24:1-3)

‘“I will sweep everything from the face of the earth,” declares the Lord.  “I will sweep away both men and animals; I will sweep away the birds of the air and the fish of the sea.  The wicked will have only heaps of rubble when I cut off man from the face of the earth,” declares the Lord.’ (Zeph. 1:2-3)

‘The great day of the Lord is near – near and coming quickly…  That day will be a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness…  I will bring distress on the people and they will walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the Lord.  Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lord’s wrath.  In the fire of his jealousy the whole world will be consumed, for he will make a sudden end of all who live in the earth.’ (Zeph. 1:14-15,17-18)

‘I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins…  I will make man scarcer than pure gold, more rare than the gold of Ophir…’ (Isa. 13:11-12)

Similarly, Jesus used the examples of the Flood in Noah’s time and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in Lot’s time as analogies of this end-times worldwide tribulation (Luke 17:26-29).  Both of these events resulted in depopulation, the first almost fully so on a worldwide scale, but the second only locally.

Using the analogy of birth-pains (i.e. wars, famines, earthquakes, pestilences, and so on), this will be the time when the end-times birth pains will be at their most intense: they will be very frequent, very intense and very painful! (Matt. 24:6-8).  It will be so bad that some people will die from heart failure as they experience deep levels of inward stress and fear over what is happening in the world:

‘On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea; men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth…’ (Luke 21:25-26 NIV and AV synthesised)

Very many people will die or be killed during the Great Tribulation, that’s how bad this time will be![12],[13] However, as bad as it will be, the Lord will not put an end to humanity even in this time of his wrath.  In his purpose and his mercy, he has shortened these days, so that, although many people will indeed die, yet at least some will survive:

‘For then there will be great distress, unequalled from the beginning of the world until now – and never to be equalled again.  If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.’ (Matt. 24:21-22)

However, as I said above, the word of God makes it clear that the moving cause of this end-times depopulation of human life on earth is the pouring out of God’s end-times wrath in judgement.  Although such things as wars, pestilences, famines and their consequent hunger and starvation, and so on, are certainly mentioned in the word of God as being birth-pains of the end-times (Matt. 24:6-8, Rev. 6:3-8), and these are certainly some of the means of depopulation spoken of by present-day globalists, yet they are not the primary moving causes of the end-times worldwide depopulation which the word of God speaks about.

The judgements described in the seals, trumpets and bowls in the book of Revelation give us a much broader picture of the multiple causes which bring about the wide depopulation of the earth.  As well as the birth-pains listed in Matthew 24:6-8, we can certainly add in the worldwide persecution and martyrdom of believers; the falling to earth of a major binary asteroid/meteorite causing widespread devastation; a major war in the Euphrates region; execution for refusing to worship the image of the Beast; judgement for taking the mark of the Beast; Antichrist’s wars; Satan’s final attempted holocaust of Jewish people; extreme weather and climate-related phenomena, and the very shaking of the planet itself (cf. Rev. 6:9-11; 8;7-10; 9:13-16; 13:15; 14:9-11; 16:2,8-9; Dan. 11:44; Zech. 13:8-9; Luke 21:25-26).  This gives us a much fuller picture of the dynamics underlying this end-times world depopulation.

Happily, however, as the words of Matthew 24:22 (above) and Zechariah 14:16 (below) make clear, there will be a significant number of people who do survive this period of world depopulation during the Great Tribulation.  The survivors will live on and will take part in the worship of Yahweh during the millennial reign of Christ:

‘Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, and to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.’ (Zech. 14:16)

[4] David Rockefeller’s brother John D. Rockefeller III had a wide and detrimental influence on medicine in that his financial influence over medical schools in USA led to the exclusion of teaching subjects such as nutrition and the use of holistic health practices, in favour of today’s synthetic pharmaceutical prescription drugs.  His financial investments in pharmaceutical companies then led to massive personal profit, and since then has led to similar continuing financial greed on the part of these companies at the expense of people’s health.  The Rockefeller bankers have influenced the pharmaceutical industry and the educational system in order to serve their own interests, leading to the suppression of holistic health, while the pharmaceutical industry has influenced the government and education system in order to control what is taught in schools and to promote their own agenda, leading to the suppression of holistic health practices.  See https://eightify.app/summary/health-and-medicine/big-pharma-s-origins-and-suppression-of-holistic-health-practices, accessed 12.02.2024.

[10] Prince Philip made this comment in a 1988 interview that he gave to Deutsche Press-Agentur.  His exact words were: ‘In the event that I am reincarnated, I would like to return as a deadly virus, to contribute something to solving overpopulation.’  See  https://www.businessinsider.in/entertainment/news/prince-philip-quote-about-reincarnating-as-a-deadly-virus-to-solve-overpopulation-resurfaces/articleshow/81992882.cms, accessed 11.02.2024.

[11] This is based on the Moderate Futurist interpretation of the book of Revelation which this book presents, and which sees the seals and first six trumpets as happening before the 3½-year long Great Tribulation.

[12] Given the present world population of around 8.1 billion people, even if say 500 million were to survive, then over a period of 3½ years that would mean an average worldwide death rate of around six million people every day during the Great Tribulation.

[13] This also, of course, implies that the rapture cannot happen post-tribulation, as there would be few if any believers still left alive to be raptured anyway.
